How to Write a Resume for Freshers in 2025

Writing your first resume can feel overwhelming — but it doesn't have to be. This guide covers everything a fresh graduate in India needs to create a resume that gets shortlisted.

1. Choose the Right Resume Format

For freshers, a reverse-chronological format works best. Your education should come before work experience since you have limited professional history.

Structure:

  1. Contact Information
  2. Career Objective (2–3 lines)
  3. Education
  4. Skills
  5. Projects / Internships
  6. Certifications
  7. Extracurricular Activities

2. Write a Strong Career Objective

Your objective should be 2–3 sentences that tell the recruiter: who you are, what you offer, and what role you're seeking.

Example:

"A motivated B.Tech Computer Science graduate from VIT Chennai with strong Python and SQL skills, seeking an entry-level Data Analyst role where I can contribute to data-driven decision making and grow with a forward-thinking team."

3. Highlight Your Education

Include:

  • Degree name and stream
  • College name
  • Year of passing / expected graduation
  • CGPA (if above 7.0)

4. Lead with Skills (Not Work Experience)

Since you lack professional experience, your skills section is critical. List both:

Technical Skills: Python, Java, Excel, SQL, Figma, AutoCAD — whatever is relevant to the role.

Soft Skills: Mention only what you can substantiate — "Presented research at college symposium" is better than just "Good communication."

5. Projects are Your Work Experience

Treat college projects and personal projects as work experience. For each project, write:

  • Project name and brief description
  • Technologies used
  • Your role and what you built
  • Impact (if any — e.g., "Reduced processing time by 30% in simulation")

6. Include Internships (Even Short Ones)

A 2-week internship still belongs on your resume. Describe what you did, not just the title.

7. Keep It to 1 Page

Recruiters spend 6–10 seconds scanning a fresher's resume. One clean, scannable page is far better than two cluttered pages.

8. Use Keywords from the Job Description

Indian companies use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) that scan for keywords. Copy relevant terms from the job description and use them naturally in your resume.

Common Fresher Resume Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Photo on resume (not required in India for most tech jobs)
  • ❌ Personal info like DOB, religion, marital status
  • ❌ Objective that says "seeking a challenging role to utilise my skills" (too generic)
  • ❌ Listing hobbies like "reading, sleeping, cooking" with no context
  • ❌ Wrong email format (use firstname.lastname@gmail.com, not coolguy123@)

Free Resume Format

Use this structure as your template and customize for each application. The best resumes are specific — not generic.
